SynthDetect is the latest addition to our range of De Beers Group Industry Services screening and detection instruments. It is specially designed for testing stones in mounted jewellery but can also be used to test loose stones.
SynthDetect is suitable for testing colourless to near-colourless stones with no lower size limit. The various jewellery attachments allow rings, bangles, brooches and necklaces to be tested. Larger jewellery pieces, along with loose stones, can be viewed in the sampling tray.
Using the principle of time-resolved photoluminescence, an image is viewed on a high-resolution touch screen and a decision can be made whether the stone is natural or synthetic.
In September 2018, SynthDetect won the 2018 Industry Innovation of the Year for Diamond Testing Technology at the JNA Awards, one of the most prestigious award programmes in the international jewellery and gemstone industry.

In October 2018, using the technology that underpins the measurement in SynthDetect and AMS2, a De Beers Group co-authored publication discusses an unusual long‐lived green luminescence signature in diamond gemstones known to be of synthetic origin.
There are a small number of natural stones that give luminescence characteristics that overlap with those from synthetics.
SynthDetect requires calibration approximately every 30 days. The software will notify you when a calibration check is due. If the calibration expires, it is still possible to operate the machine.
SynthDetect will classify non-diamond as ‘Refer’. Further tests are required to confirm a stone’s identity in this case.
This will result in an increased referral rate. SynthDetect is failsafe and will not even pass a synthetic out with the colour specifications.
A powered USB hub can be safely used with the instrument. A non-powered hub can cause the instrument not to function correctly and in extreme cases can cause damage.
This error can occur if the instrument is powered down with the application still running. Please contact technical support at techsupport@iidgr.com and provide the TeamViewer ID. This can then be rectified by the support team.
